How Does an Industrial Chiller Work?
A chiller’s mechanical compression cycle has four components that the refrigerant passes through the evaporator, the compressor, the condenser, and the expansion valve.
During the cycle, the condenser serves as a two-fold component. The high–pressure refrigerant vapor needs to first be de–superheated (brought to a saturated condition). A sufficient amount of heat needs to be transferred from the refrigerant to lower its temperature to saturation temperature. Condensation can then start. The quality of the refrigerant decreases as heat transfers from the refrigerant vapor to the air (or water in the case of a water condenser) until the refrigerant is fully condensed. Ideally, this occurs at the outlet of the condenser, but realistically some subcooling is usual. The sub-cooled liquid provides protection against liquid flashing as the refrigerant loses pressure in the tubing and other components.
At this point, the refrigerant is a high-pressure, high-temperature liquid. There’s one more process to undergo before it turns into a useful heat transfer medium for cooling: the temperature must be lowered. This is the job of the thermostatic expansion valve, which decreases the pressure and subsequently the temperature. The valve modulates to help maintain pressure, but since it is primarily a superheat control, it won’t be able to maintain constant pressure. To achieve constant pressure, an evaporator pressure regulator valve can be added to the system.
In the last stage, the refrigerant—which is now a mixture of saturated liquid and vapor—moves through the evaporator tubing. Warm air blows across the evaporator and transfers heat to the boiling refrigerant. The refrigerant doesn’t increase in temperature, but it does change state as the liquid boils off and the vapor is saturated, ready to restart the process. The chiller continues this cycle until the space is refrigerated to the desired temperature. The equipment then cycles off.

Types of Chillers
- air
- water
- evaporative
consolidated chiller
There are four subcategories in every one of the above classifications for mechanical chillers
- reciprocating
- centrifugal
- screw driven
- and absorption chillers.
The essential three types are mechanical chillers which are controlled by electric engines, steam, or gas turbines. An assimilation chiller is fueled by a warm source like steam and uses no moving parts.
Parts of an Industrial Chiller
The mechanical pressure cycle has four essential parts through which the refrigerant passes:
- The evaporator
- The compressor
- The condenser
- the expansion valve
The evaporator inside the chiller will work at a lower weight and lower temperature than the condenser.
